GI-Tagged Products of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a country rich in cultural heritage, traditional craftsmanship, agricultural diversity, and unique local products. Many of these products represent the history, identity, and expertise of the communities that have produced them for generations. Geographical Indication (GI) recognition plays an important role in protecting these products and connecting their identities to their places of origin.

Saeed Ul Alam is working on GI-tagged products of Bangladesh, a field that highlights the importance of protecting traditional knowledge, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting authentic Bangladeshi products. This work contributes to raising awareness of the value of GI recognition and the opportunities it can create for local producers, artisans, farmers, and entrepreneurs.

Bangladesh is known for distinctive products such as Jamdani sarees, Bangladeshi Hilsa, Tangail sarees, and other regionally associated products. GI recognition can help strengthen their identity, support their market reputation, discourage misleading use of geographical names, and create opportunities for wider national and international recognition.

Promoting GI-tagged products is not only about protecting a product’s name. It is also about preserving traditional skills, supporting local livelihoods, empowering rural communities, and ensuring that Bangladesh’s cultural and economic heritage continues to thrive.

Through continued work and awareness in this area, GI-tagged products can become an important part of Bangladesh’s strategy for heritage preservation, product authenticity, and sustainable economic development.
